Exciting Times Ahead For Soccer Fans This July !

Soccer fans at both sides of the causeway are in for a very busy month this July , with the EPL ‘ Big Four ' Clubs look to set foot on our local shores as well as across the causeway . The exciting month of July will begin with Defending Champions Man United coming here on 6 July 2011 as they parade their Title winning throphy to their fans and supporters . Then a week later , it is the turn for EPL fans in Malaysia to get excited as one by one Arsenal , Liverpool and Chelsea ( in that order ) will visit Malaysia to play a Series of Friendly Matches against the Malaysian national soccer team at the Bukit Jalil Stadium .

This will present EPL fans both in Singapore and Malaysia a chance to catch a glimpse of their favourite clubs and players up close in the flesh . Malaysia will first play Hosts to the Gunners on 13 July 2011 , then to Liverpool three days later , with the series of Friendly Matches ending with Chelsea’s visit on 21 July 2011 . During this period of time , Liverpool will make a stopover here in Singapore for a one day training session in front of invited fans on 17 July 2011 .

And if that is still not enough , both sets of fans ( Singapore and Malaysia ) may have to put any friendship aside and be on opposite ends for at least 180 minutes if it is Malaysia that will take on the Singapore Lions in a crucial two Legged Home and Away World Cup Qualifiers on 23 July 2011 and 28 July 2011 .

This July , Argentina will be playing Hosts to some of the biggest teams in South American football as the 43rd Edition of the COPA America Tournament kicks off at the start of the month of July. And soccer fans here in Singapore will be able to catch the full three weeks Tournament LIVE & EXCLUSIVE at the comfort of their own homes with all the 26 Matches shown LIVE on Starhub Football Channel 222 !

Starhub Cable TV recently announced that they had successfully secured the LIVE Broadcasting Rights to the three weeks long COPA America Tournament in Argentina from 1 July 2011 To 24 July 2011 and will be showing all the 26 Matches LIVE on Starhub Football Channel 222 !

The COPA America Tournament is South American's version of the Euro Championships , the latter Tournament to be held next year in Poland & Ukraine - the two countries co - hosting next summer's soccer showpiece Event . COPA America 2011 : Hosts Argentina & Asian Cup 2011 Champs Japan Drawn In Same Group !

Hosts Argentina were handed a tough Group Stage Draw as they were drawn to play recently crowned Asian Cup Champions Japan in the same Group ( Group A ) , together with Colombia and Bolivia . Japan recently won the Asian Cup 2011 Tournament in Qatar , defeating Australia 1 – 0 to lay claim on the throphy for the Fourth Time !

The ten South American countries and the two invited countries ( Japan & Mexico ) were split into three Groups , with four teams in each Group . Defending Champs Brazil is due to play Paraguay , Ecuador and the previous COPA America Hosts Venezuela in Group B .

The prospect of an early chance for Jose Mourinho to avenge their humiliating 5 – 0 league defeat to arch rivals Barcelona end of November last year - their only loss suffered in the league this season looks all the more likely now , especially after the latter latest progression in the competition with a 6 – 3 aggregate victory against Real Betis ( winning 5 - 0 at home in the first Leg , but lost 3 - 1 in the second leg match last night ) . Despite the shock defeat in the away leg last night , the Catalans still had done enough to qualify for the Semifinals and avoided an early meeting with Real Madrid too , making way for a possible ' El Clasico ' Cup Final !

The other two confirmed sides in the last four of the Copa Del Rey are Sevilla and Almeria . Barcelona victory last night set up a Semifinal Match with Almeria and Real Madrid will play Sevilla in the other semifinal , after their 1-0 away second leg victory against Atletico Madrid last night .

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are currently neck to neck in the League Title race with four points separating between the two sides . It will be a really interesting and exciting encounter to see the two sides square off for their very first silverware of this League Season should both sides manage to progress all the way to the Cup Final from their two – legged Home and Away Semifinal encounter to be played on 26 January and 2 February 2011 .

The Copa Del Rey Cup Final will be held on 20 April 2011 .

Commentary - Right Or Rash Move To Sack Lions National Team ?

As the saying goes “ If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it " . But as the Lions crashed and crumbled so miserably in the AFF Suzuki Cup – a Tournament they were expected to progress far without much fuss with an easy Group , something ought to be done . And then came the decision to sack the whole national team . A decision the FAS felt would be the solution to the problem , or so they thought .

So is taking the drastic and unprecedented move to drop the entire national team the right decision ? Or is it just a daring gamble taken by the FAS hoping that it would turn right and reap rewards in the end ? Allow me to draw the Lions fall from grace to two soccer teams as two contrasting views for examples .

Wrong Decision ?

Singapore Lions vs England Three Lions

After England crashed out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa last year , there were calls for Fabio Capello to step down and pay with his job for failing to lead the Three Lions far enough in the World Cup . But the English FA not only decided to stick with Fabio Capello for another two years till after Euro 2012 at least , most importantly they did not press the panic button and said they were going to expel the whole national team !

Frank Lampard , Steven Gerrard , Rio Ferdinand , John Terry …. Not a single name was mentioned or axed from the squad . Instead Fabio Capello has promised that he is willing to bring in some new faces while he continues to be at the helm . And look at where England is now in their Euro 2012 Qualifying Group ? For the record , England’s prospect of making it to the Euro 2012 competition proper in Poland and Ukraine looks bright at the moment with them currently in second place in their qualifying Group G with seven points after having played three matches with two Wins and one Draw .

The same could be done with our own Lions National soccer team too . Similarly , we need not drop every single player in the squad and still be able to do well in their next international competitive Tournament – the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers which commences in June . If England can do it , there is no reason why we can’t , considering our plight and theirs are almost identical !

By taking this shocking and ( and I call it a rash decision ) to drop every single player , I felt we are actually taking a step backwards instead of going forward ! Since we need to build a brand new squad right from scratch again . Whereas if we were to retain the original squad , the core of the team is already there , the basic foundation and big game experience etc that the players had have already been installed within the squad , with not much tinkering needed .

Right Decision ?

On the other hand , one just need to point out the problems Liverpool had all these while to tell you straight in the face that changing just the Manager alone ( with the squad remaining intact ) will not solve the problem either . Gone is Roy Hodgson who took over the Reds from Rafa Benitez , but even the former who led his former club Fulham to Europa League glory is powerless to Liverpool downfall . The Reds inability to perform has been very well documented and publicized all these while from last season campaign till the current one and so it was just not too long ago that Kenny Dalglish – the fans hot favourite to take over from Roy Hodgson came to take charge for the remainder of the season .

Still the Reds struggled , already with two defeats ( to Man United – FA Cup Third Round & Blackpool – EPL ) and a Draw ( vs Everton last night ) under his charge . Even so they were lucky to escape with a point as Everton were leading 2-1 with the Reds equalizer coming from a Kuyt penalty . So the Reds aren’t exactly out of the woods yet under their new Manager , whom they call King Kenny .

One may argue that it is rather unfair to draw comparison between a national team and a club side . It is like comparing an apple with an egg or orange , as a national team comprises of players born and bred in the country they are currently residing in while clubs have many players coming from many different countries plying their trade in the respective Leagues . But one thing is similar . Some national team do accept ‘ foreigners ‘ too – those not born and bred in the country they are currently representing for internationally but only got to play after getting citizenship or PR Status. One such example is Owen Hargreaves who is Canada born but plays for England .

So , what should the Reds do next ? Axe the entire squad and ‘ promote’ their reserve team to play in the EPL instead ? Maybe they should or they would if our very own gamble does pay off with us performing well in the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers !

The FAS may have received lots of stick for their bold decision to drop the entire national squad , but who knows this very same decision may finally see us qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil ? You laugh ….? Maybe the FAS will be the ones that will have the last laugh instead !

Commentary - A Case of Deja Vu ? Singapore Lions & England Sorry Plight !

A Case of Deja Vu ? You will find what I am about to write here all too familiar and similar . And I won’t blame you .

One can’t help but to draw similarities with our Lions national soccer team's recent sorry plight after their AFF Suzuki Cup exit with the Three Lions national soccer team . Like England after their FIFA World Cup exit in South Africa in which they were also highly expected to progress far without much fuss with an easy Group phase , they crashed and crumbled .

Like England , there were calls for Raddy Avramovich to step down and pay with his job for failing to lead the Singapore Lions far enough in the AFF Suzuki Cup competition . But just like the English FA's decision to stick with Fabio Capello for another two years till after Euro 2012 at least , the FAS ( Football Association of Singapore ) have also backed Raddy Avramovich as the man to continue leading the Singapore Lions national soccer team for their upcoming FIFA 2014 World Cup Qualifiers which commences in June as well as the SEA Games at the end of the year .

And just like Fabio Capello , Raddy Avramovich has also promised that he will wield the axe if necessary and will not hesitate to drop any under performing players . So we should expect to see some new faces emerging in the national team while he continues to be at the helm .

Lest Singaporeans were not able to feel the disappointment and pain that the English fans have gone through after England crashed out of the World Cup to Germany last summer , now they really do . For the exact same plight is now being replayed on our very own Lions national soccer team . Call it coincidental or ironic , but if what had happened to the England national team is really being repeated here , Singaporeans will certainly hope that the Singapore Lions can emulate what England did in their Euro 2012 Qualifiers by turning in a huge solid performance in the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers . This way , Singapore Lions' dream of making it to the FIFA World Cup will no longer be an unattainable dream but finally a reality .

Mediacorp Channel 5 Decision To Delay Telecast Match Stays !

Mediacorp Channel 5 decision to Delay Telecast Tonight’s AFF Suzuki Cup Final Group B Match between Singapore vs Vietnam will still stay despite the many calls and appeals made by local soccer fans on their Facebook Wall . The uproar of many Singaporeans also saw a petition page being created in Twitter seeking like minded fans to pen their signatures to support the movement .

But despite all these efforts , die hard Lions fans WILL NOT get to see the Match being shown LIVE Tonight at 8.30pm on Mediacorp Channel 5 ! Normal programming will stay with Ninja Warrior at 8pm , followed by News 5 Tonight at 9.30pm , with the match to be shown as DELAYED Telecast after the News Buttetin at 10pm . Calls and appeals to Channel 5 on their Facebook Wall for them to exercise some flexibility to their normal programming schedules have apparently fallen on deaf ears too !

Many echoed similar sentiments that if this all important crucial match could not be Telecast LIVE on Mediacorp Channel 5 itself due to the News Buttetin , they can make other alternate arrangements for it to be shown on other Mediacorp Channels such as okto Channel , or even pre-tempted some of their normal programming as well as have the News shown later at 10.30pm instead , after the soccer match had ended . After all , these were done during their coverage of the Youth Olympic Games , Commonwealth Games and the recently concluded Asian Games held in Guangzhou last month . So , the same could also be done for just one day tonight , says the fans leaving angry comments on Channel 5 Facebook Wall .

In their reply to local fans appeals and complaints on their Facebook Page , Channel 5 citied ‘ schedule considerations ‘ as their main reason for not being able to carry the Singapore vs Vietnam match LIVE Tonight at 8.30pm .

Dear all,

Ch5 is aware of the feedback on Facebook and Twitter. But due to schedule considerations, we are unable to play the match “live”.

We will however, telecast it at the soonest possible timeslot at 10pm.

Decision To Delay Telecast Singapore vs Vietnam AFF Suzuki Cup Match Angers Fans !

The wall of Mediacorp Channel 5 Official Facebook Page was flooded with appeals and comments made by many angry die-hard Singapore soccer fans yesterday with the Channel decision not to show the Lions crucial AFF Suzuki Cup Final Group B Match LIVE at 8.30pm tomorrow night . And it is very easy to understand why the fans are furiously up in arms over Channel 5 decision to Delayed Telecast the Match at 10pm instead .

The Lions 2 -1 hard fought victory against Mymmnar on Sunday , together with a shock 2 - 0 defeat for the defending Champions and co-host nation Vietnam at the hands of the Philippines on the same night meant that the Philippines are now top of the Group with 4 points going to tomorrow match with Mynnmar , needing at least just a Draw to qualify to the last four . A Draw for the Lions who are now similar on points with the Group Leaders would also be enough to see them through to the semifinals .

Therefore with the possibility of the Lions making it through to the next stage seemingly high on the cards , it is no wonder Singaporeans are so excited , anxious and looking forward to catch the Match LIVE on Channel 5 so much that besides the Channel 5 Facebook Page , a petition has also been created by a local soccer fan on Twitter , encouraging like minded soccer fans to sign in and support the cause .

The petition at the Twitter Page has attracted 13 signatures so far , with many more expected to sign up before the kickoff of this crucial match tomorrow night .

Furthermore , to be able to win the COPA America on their arch rival's turf , especially when they will be going into next year's competition as Defending Champions after coming out triumphs in the last Edition three years ago ( ironically against Argentina in the Final ) will go a long way to making up for all the blame that comes with their early World Cup exit .

Whether that would be sufficient enough for the team to be ready for the Tournament that they will be hosting in four Years time is anybody guess .

So they will be expected to treat the COPA America competition next year very seriously to see where they actually stand after one year and to fine tune and prepare for the Confederations Cup in 2013 and the 2014 World Cup .

Also , with the rise of Uruguay , Paraguay , alongside traditional powerhouses Brazil and Argentina , with four South American teams in the Quarter Finals for the first time in the continent's World Cup History , the former two will be eager to repeat and carry that fantastic form to the COPA America next year and prove that they are indeed on the rise .

So , what all these means is that soccer fans will be in for a real treat and a spectacle of nearly one month of great COPA America Tournament is in store for all of us next year ! If it really does live up to the huge expectations as we have come to expect of the teams and players , this will be one of the best COPA America Tournaments in the history of the South American's showpiece Event !

So the Singapore Selection side which made up of mostly Young Lions players gave a commendable account of themselves , losing only by a solitary Chris Eagles goal to Burnley FC in a Friendly Match played at Jalan Besar Stadium last night . A strong crowd of 5100 people turned up to be part of this once in a lifetime rare occasion to catch Burnley FC in action playing at our shores . But sadly though , those who could not make it at the venue were not able to catch this exciting match LIVE on TV yesterday . Mediacorp Channel 5 which had previously shown Liverpool Friendly Match against the Lions Senior Team LIVE from the National Stadium last year , did not telecast last night encounter with Championship side Burnley FC . Neither did any of Starhub Cable TV Sports Channels .

Why was this the case ? Some felt it was due to the fact that it was Burnley FC and not a big household name that the respective TV Stations refused to screen the match LIVE ! While it may be Burnley and not Barcelona , or some other EPL clubs such as Bolton or Blackburn Rovers making their trip here , still due " respect " should be given to them ! After all , they were plying their trade in top League football only last Season and had achieved giant killing victories along the way , over the likes of Man United , Tottenham and Liverpool . If anything , many felt that they were quite unlucky to be relegated to Championship football .

Quite a large number of soccer fans here were visibly disappointed with Mediacorp & Starhub TV no show of the Friendly Match which Lions coach Raddy Avromach even said that it was a chance to see the future of the national side . Most of the players who took to the field clearly treat this Friendly Match as their preparation for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in China this November . But sadly , Singaporeans were not able to rally their support for the young national team playing possibily their biggest game of their lives against a reputable quality team like Burnley FC .

Both Mediacorp Channel 5 & Starhub Cable TV certainly owe the many die hard local soccer fans here an explanation as to why this highly anticipated match was not shown LIVE !

In just a month's time , soccer fans here will have to get used to watching their favourite EPL clubs in Action on a weekly basis on a brand new platform , that comes with a whole lot of new viewing experience , as beginning from this Season onwards , LIVE EPL Matches will be shown on SingTel miotv , instead of on Starhub Football Channel . Under the broadcasting rights , this will remain so for the next three years till Year 2013 ( 2012 / 2013 Season ) , for which the teleco company paid an estimated price of 400 million for it . But the question is , is it really worth that much money , now especially with the World Cup that has just concluded ?

Also , is it still worth making the switch over too , if u were previously a Starhub Cable TV Subscriber , just for the sake of nine months of EPL ? A number of soccer fans here are beginning to have their doubts too . And some are not about to make the switch just yet , and are adopting a wait and see approach . And they sure have their reasons for doing so .

The England national team crashed out of the World Cup at the Round of 16 Stage to Germany , and by a big margin too ( 4 - 1 ) . Secondly , the big name stars who ply their trade in the EPL , and who were expected to perform on this big stage all failed miserably . Wayne Rooney who have been firing all season for Man United did not manage to register a single goal to his name . Steven Gerrard , besides scoring the opening goal in the opening group match against the USA , fired blanks for the Three Lions for the rest of their matches . Jermaine Defoe only scored in England's last World Cup match ( in the Round of 16 Clash against Germany) . Frank Lampard could have his name on the scoresheet too in the same match , but it was to be a case of ' the goal that wasn't ' as all the referees unbelievably did not see the ball having crossed the goalline , and denying them the equaliser , which would have put them level at 2 - 2 going into the halftime break . Other that that , the England team were simply woeful and disappointing , to say the least .

Compare this to say , the Spanish League - the League which very often was being rated second best by many fans here in Singapore behind the EPL , now boost a team we can all proudly call world champions - Barcelona , with seven first team starters playing for that club . And that figure could very soon increase to eight or even nine , if rumours of Cesc Fabergas and Fernando Torres joining them from Arsenal and Liverpool respectively turns out to be true .

Even their catalan rivals - Real Madrid now have a big name Manager in Jose Mourinho this Season , a man who never fails to create miracles and making the impossible happen wherever he goes ! They also had a golden glove winner in goalkeeper Iker Casillas , and not forgetting Diego Forlan , whose superb goals saw Uruguay make it to the semifinals and eventually finishing fourth . He was joint top scorers with five goals and also won himself the Golden Ball Award . He had really continued with his impressive club form onto the world national stage , helping Atletico Madrid to the Europa League throphy and now to international honour for his country .

Even the German League suddenly becomes a much more interesting League to follow this season thanks to the German national team outstanding performance in the World Cup . And so , it is also of no surprise that very often Starhub Cable TV in their promo for the two Leagues that they will be carrying on their platform this year are constantly raving and seemed really proud of the achievements by the Spanish and the German national team in South Africa .

Now it seems that Starhub TV is indeed having the last laugh with what they are left with , hoping that with such great showing at the World Cup , they will be able to attract new fans , more viewers to follow the German and Spanish League this season for a change .

What about the EPL then where it was seen as really value for money when SingTel miotv paid a whopping 400 million for their three Seasons of broadcasting rights ? Now fans seems to be lukewarm and don't really feel very excited or are actually looking forward to the start of this new EPL Season which will kick off on 14 August 2010 , as compared to previous Seasons in the past .

The Community Shield - EPL traditional curtain raiser , usually held exactly one week before the commencement of the new EPL Season , will pit Chelsea - last Season's EPL & FA Cup Double Champions against League Runners up Man United at Wembley Stadium on the eve of National Day this year . The opening day Fixtures a week later also throws up some very exciting and mouth watering clashes too - Liverpool vs Arsenal , Man City vs Tottenham , Man United vs Newcastle United etc ...

So , will the England national team poor performance really have an adverse effect in the interests of local fans here towards the new EPL Season this year , as they opt for a switch to watching and following the Spanish League and German League instead ? This will be a time to see how loyal and faithful Singapore fans are towards their favourite EPL clubs that they have been supporting for a long time . Calling all Man United , Liverpool , Chelsea , Arsenal fans out there , are / will u still be with them this season ?

The new German League Season kicks off on 22 August 2010 onwards , while the Spanish League begins at the last weekend of this month on 29 August 2010 .

For those who decided to give either SingTel miotv or Starhub Cable World Cup Packages a miss due to what they felt were very high subscription prices , ( currently one has to pay $94.16 to enjoy the Matches at the comfort of their own homes ) the above must have come as a piece of very good News to them indeed ! Just few days after reports that 15 of the Community Centres will be bringing this year's World Cup closer to the heartlands , the popular fast food restaurant has also announced that 34 of it's Outlets will be broadcasting LIVE World Cup Matches too !

In an hour's Time , the last and final round of Italian Serie A Matches will be played , officially bringing an end to a long nine months of exciting and dramatic Italian League Season , where both Inter Milan and Roma are still locked in a two horse battle for top spot going into Tonight's Season Finale ! Both Inter Milan and Roma will be playing away going into Tonight's final round of Matches . Inter will travel to Siena , while Roma plays Chievo away .

But soccer fans here will be left out of all the last day Title Race Action as SingTel miotv , the Pay TV Cable Station which broadcasts LIVE Italian Serie A Matches here WILL NOT be showing either or both of the Matches LIVE ! Instead , local Italian League fans here are left with a LIVE Match that is totally inconsequential to the Italian Serie A Title Race - Catania vs Genoa .

A check on SingTel miotv TV Guide for Tonight revealed that only it's Football Frenzy Channel 61 will be showing Italian Serie A Catania vs Genoa Match LIVE , while there are no indications whatsoever on the TV Schedules of it's two other Channels miotv Channel 62 & 63 ! Thus , in other words , all these meant that the two Matches that are of real high importance - Siena vs Inter and Chievo vs Roma are very unlikely or will not be shown LIVE at all !

Understandably , this shocking news did not go down well with regular and frequent Italian League soccer fans here at all ! They felt that having followed the League for such a long period of time , the least is a LIVE Match involving the Title Race and not one that does not have any consequence to it at all ! Soccer fans here are understand to be fuming mad and utterly disappointed with the Pay TV Operator for failing to secure either or both of the Matches LIVE !

Some even drew a comparison to it's rival's LIVE Coverage of the Spanish League where it's League Season will also end Tonight . The main difference , they had pointed out is that Starhub Cable TV will be showing both Barcelona and Real Madrid Matches LIVE . The two teams are currently being separated by a single point , with both needing to win their respective Matches to be sure of winning the Title ! Barcelona Hosts Valladolid , while Real Madrid travels away to Malaga .

With the LIVE Telecast , it ensured the Spanish League fans will be able to get into all the last day Drama and excitement and witnessing either Barcelona or Real Madrid being crowned Champions and lifting the throphy LIVE on TV !

First , soccer fans snubbed both Starhub Cable and SingTel miotv World Cup Package , now even coffeeshop owners are crying foul over the high subscription prices that they had to pay to screen this year's Tournament in South Africa . It seems that both the telecos may be fighting a lost cause ahead of this year's World Cup , with just exactly a month to the Big Kickoff !

Many soccer fans had clearly made their feelings known on Facebook and other various Internet Forums that they would rather look for alternative means elsewhere , such as watching the Matches LIVE outdoors in nearby coffeshops than willing to fork out seven times the amount they had paid to sign up four years ago . Now these fans were dealt a further blow with news that quite a large number of coffeshop owners do not intend to subscribe to screen the World Cup Matches LIVE , as they also could not afford the high prices !

As doing so would mean that the coffeeshop owners would have a big hole burnt in their wallets and pockets with the subscription prices ranging from $1888 to $4888 , depending on the sizes of their TV Sets and how many of those TV Sets are wired up to show the World Cup Matches LIVE .

It's seems that both telecos are now fighting a lost cause , while at the other end , it's all doom and gloom for local soccer fans too . Is it really dead end or is there still light at the end of the tunnel for soccer fans here ?

It could be more of a case of the telecos fighting a tough battle than the fans finding all these shocks too much to accept . One main reason is that , way before this deal was struck , there had been numerous reports in various local Newspapers as well as soccer fans themselves already making up their minds to enjoy next Month's Tournament by other alternative means . With each passing day that the deal had not been finalised and with the clock fast ticking down to the Big Kickoff , fans got very desperate that they would never get to enjoy the World Cup on TV , so the fans having done their own ' homework ' and ' research ' long ago while waiting for this ' official announcement ' from the teleos , have already settled for what they feel is the much better option .

After all , they still get to enjoy the World Cup and the best thing of all , to them at least , they don't have to pay a single cent for it ! It's FREE !

Never mind that one may not get to watch the World Cup Matches in coffeeshops , for those who still wish to catch the LIVE Matches outdoors , there may still be a glimmer of hope , though no promises yet . McDonalds and S - 11 outlets are just some of the places in the heartlands that may be showing LIVE World Cup Matches when the Tournament officially Kick Off next month .

Unless the two telecos decide to change their tactics and make slight adjustments to their subscription prices , more fans are likely to give them a miss and look elsewhere where pastures are greener in the world outside . Very much the same reasons as to why a player would want out of a particular football club to seek for greener pastures , and the terms and conditions he would look for when signing for a new football club . Isn't it ?

Singapore soccer fans are not exactly very happy and celebrating after news of Starhub & SingTel having finalised the long running World Cup Broadcast deal with FIFA , all because of the high price that they had to pay . Local soccer fans were quick to make their feelings known about the high price being charged to enjoy all 64 World Cup Matches LIVE via our two Pay TV platforms - Starhub TV and SingTel miotv . Most soccer fans were put off by the high subscription price that some had already considered turning to other alternatives such as watching the LIVE Matches from neighbouring Free To Air TV Channels such as Malaysia RTM 1 & RTM 2 and Indonesia RCTI Channel , or even to catch it Online via Free Live Streaming sites .

Many had expressed their unhappiness online via Facebook and on various Internet Forums . Some had even gone to the extent of setting up a Facebook Group - ' I Will Not Subscribe To SingTel and Starhub FIFA World Cup Coverage ' to voice their unhappiness . On the day that the news broke out that the two telecos had clinched the deal , along with their pricing plans , this Facebook Site had already attracted 91 Fans . Today , this number has already grown to a whopping 920 people , while others simply went to Starhub Official Facebook Page and made their voices heard on how they really feel about the World Cup Package .

" even though they calculated that it's only 1 dollar a match but who the hell watch all the matches ? I have given up on BPL . Giving up the WC is alright too . Can always watch it on the internet . "

" Not worth . We are only interested in watching the big teams plays . No one will be watching all the 64 matches . Don't be a fool . We are not paying $1 per match . You should introduce a pay per view option and charge us $1 per match . "

" Hands up on who wants to watch Algeria vs Slovenia , Paraguay vs Slovakia , New Zealand vs Slovakia , Paraguay vs New Zealand , Honduras vs Chile , Switzerland vs Honduras and Chile vs Switzerland ? I wonder if South Korea vs Greece would have people rushing to the coffeeshops to catch those matches ? "

Starhub Cable TV will end their long running EPL Coverage on it's platform on a real high with nine LIVE Matches and one as Delayed Telecast in this Sunday highly anticipated Season Finale ! And out of the nine LIVE Matches , two will be made available for FREE to all Starhub TV Subscribers !

Burnley vs Tottenham & Hull City vs Liverpool Match will be made available LIVE for FREE this Sunday on two of Starhub Free Channels - Starhub Preview Channel ( Channel 101 ) & SuperSports Arena ( Channel 201 ) respectively , with the rest of the six Matches on their usual Channels - five on their Football Channel and two on their SuperSports Channels ( not including the Hull City vs Liverpool Match on SuperSports Arena Channel ) . With latest reports that soccer fans in Singapore may not even get to experience the consolation of at least the " supposed " four World Cup LIVE Matches to be shown Free To Air , soccer fans may be forced to tune in to Indonesian RCTI Channel as their very resort in order not to miss out on the world's biggest soccer fiesta Event this June ! And if it really does have to come to this , it may very well see the Indonesian RCTI Channel TV viewership figures soar to new heights for their EXCLUSIVE Coverage of the month long Event in South Africa !

It was earlier learnt that only countries or TV Channels which have successfully secured the World Cup broadcasting rights with FIFA will then be able to telecast the Opening Matches , the two SemiFinals Matches as well as the Cup Final for FREE on TV ! Following the defeat , Singapore are now third in Group E , two points behind Thailand , so only a victory in Bangkok this Wednesday will see them leapfrog the Thais to reclaim their second place spot in the Group which they had lost after last night's defeat . RCTI Channel To Show LIVE Italian Serie A League Matches On Monday Night !

As the famous saying goes " U Gain Some , U Lose Some " ... and this saying very aptly applied to soccer fans who have been getting their regular LIVE soccer fix from the Indonesian RCTI Channel ! Indonesian soccer fans & a number of Singaporean ones ( who could gain access to the Channel ) here were indeed shocked to find out that the Channel will NOT be showing Spanish League LIVE Matches for this 2009 / 2010 New La Liga Season ! And so their hopes of watching the million dollar stars plying their trade at Real Madrid were dashed as the Channel's seemed to have ' lost ' the Spanish League LIVE Broadcasting rights to another TV Channel - TV One this Season !

RCTI Channel has been the Channel bringing to soccer fans LIVE UEFA Champions League & Spanish League Matches to both countries soccer fans over the years . While the Channel still does continue to show LIVE UEFA Champions League Matches for this New Season , Spanish League fans will now have to turn to TV One Channel instead for their LIVE Coverage !

But , all is not lost yet though ! It seems that soccer fans may get to watch Italian Serie A LIVE Matches On RCTI Channel instead , but only for Monday morning's ( Singapore Time 2.45am ) Fixtures Beginning from this week onwards ! For a start , the Channel will be showing AC Milan vs Bari LIVE & EXCLUSIVE at 2.45am ( Monday , 28 Sept 2009 - Singapore Time ! ) .

This sudden decision by Indonesian RCTI Channel not to show Spanish League Matches LIVE for this Season comes as a real shock to many soccer fans here as well as back home in Indonesia as the Channel has been doing so for these past few years ! This move comes as very sudden and abrupt indeed ! Also , some soccer fans also observed that the Channel's LIVE soccer Coverage this second half of the year especially have decreased quite rapidly , in terms of the number of LIVE Matches & Competitions they are broadcasting !

Most notably has to be earlier this Month where there were two Rounds of South American World Cup Qualifying Matches being played , but none of it were being shown LIVE on RCTI Channel ! Both times , only one of the five Matches each were being shown as DELAYED Telecast - Brazil vs Argentina & Brazil vs Chile .

As such , some soccer fans here in Singapore can't help but feel that Starhub Cable could have a part to play in this , as they felt that the local cable operator could have done something to serve as a reminder or warning to them - such as writing a warning letter to the Indonesian TV Station against broadcasting both the Spanish League & South American World Cup Qualifying Matches which Starhub Football Channel are showing !

And their ' speculation ' and ' theory ' may just have been proven right ! Ironically , the two Competitions which the Indonesian RCTI Channel are currently showing it LIVE on it's Channel - UEFA Champions League & Italian Serie A .... Both competitions Starhub Cable happened NOT to be showing it this Season , after having lost the LIVE broadcasting rights to their rival operator - Singtel mio tv !

So , this really brings some soccer fans here to think and wonder if Starhub Cable did actually have a part to play in influencing the Indonesian RCTI Channel sudden decision not to show both the Spanish League & South American World Cup Qualifying Matches LIVE on it's Channel , which they felt the Channel ' rightly ' should be doing so .... Is there really a ' conspiracy ' behind this as suggested by some soccer fans here ?

When he was free and available , no one bid an eyelid or even bothered to make any attempt to try to sign him from relegated club Newcastle United , with every club already starting to write him off and deemed him to be surplus to the club's requirements and therefore all tried to stay away from the player as far as possible . All except one man - Sir Alex Ferguson ! Only he was brave enough and dared to take a gamble and signed Michael Owen for free .

Now after four Pre - Season Friendly Matches , Owen is proving to be a worthy purchase after scoring four goals for his new club and in the process , seemed to have managed to resurrect his career from the doldrums all Thanks to the wily Scotsman . While many others were oblivious to the potential that Owen still does possess , only Sir Alex managed to see some value and positives in the man who spent more of his time off the field , on the sidelines nursing his injuries than playing soccer on the pitch .

A Season that saw him plagued by injuries and eventually hampered his chances of playing for the England National Team , Owen is now determined to prove all his critics wrong by joining a club which he knows will surely allow him to perform to his best ability and regain his match fitness once again and to the true potential of the player he once was . His four goals in Man United Pre - Season Asia Tour so far is already testament of that .

Scoring two goals in the two matches against the Malaysia XI Side , and twice in the same match itself against Hangzhou Greentown in China , averaging almost a goal a game whenever he plays , must have certainly brought smiles on the faces of his new Manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well as his new teammates and fans . Though the New EPL Season has not yet started , but if Owen could keep up on his scoring form and keep on scoring like he is doing right now when the EPL Season begins and eventually starts to help Man United win some silverware in the coming New Season , then the person having the last laugh of it all must surely have been Sir Alex Ferguson ! For he knows that he had come up with a masterstroke of a genius and managed to pull off a major transfer coup without even having to pay a single cent for his services at all when everyone else hesitated !

If last night's results and performances in the Audi Cup ( which they lost 4-1 to Bayern Munich ) is anything to go by , then AC Milan will surely find the going ahead of them even tougher when the new Italian Serie A Season kicks off end of next month . Following their latest defeat last night , this is already the club's fourth straight defeat in their Pre - Season Friendly Matches after earlier defeats to EPL powerhouse Chelsea , Milan city rival - Inter Milan and Club America in the US .

Together with their 4 -1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup Semi Final Match last night , and earlier losses to Chelsea ( 2 -1 ) , Inter Milan ( 2 - 0 ) and Club America ( 2 -1 ) in their Pre - Season Tour of the US in the World Football Challenge Tournament , it seems that the depatures of Brazillian striker Kaka ( to Real Madrid ) , coach Carlos Ancoletti ( to Chelsea ) & David Beckham ( to LA Galaxy ) after his loan spell with the club ended last Season has certainly hit the club really hard !

Will Steven Gerrard Come To Singapore ? That has to be the very first question on everyone's mind after the Reds captain was cleared of affray last night ! Hopes were raised of a possible Steven Gerrard appearance here in Singapore where the team were due to play a Friendly Match against the Singapore Lions National Team tomorrow at the National Stadium , after news of him being cleared of any wrongdoing in court started to spread through Liverpool Fans here in Singapore .

But while the Reds Fans in Singapore were hoping that Steven Gerrard will still be able to make a surprise appearance here when the team take onto the field tomorrow night , the man himself surprised everyone by staying back home , played in a Friendly Match against Tranmere Rovers and even scored a goal from 25 Yards in his ' Debut ' immediately after the week long court case which ended only yesterday .

Just hours after being cleared of affray, Steven Gerrard returned to action with a goal for Liverpool in a friendly match played on Friday.

According to liverpoolfc.tv, the Liverpool captain scored from 25 yards for the Reds' first equaliser and played for 64 minutes before being substituted in the Pre-Season Merseyside Derby against Tranmere Rovers last night .

Tranmere Rovers , who are now managed by former Reds John Barnes and Jason McAteer, gave the Liverpool reserves a tough time at Prenton Park. Liverpool fell behind yet again and needed an injury-time penalty by Adam Hammill to pull Liverpool back to 2-2.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez who is touring with the main squad in Singapore here , was relieved that the midfielder was cleared of all charges.

All the Man United players , Team Officials & especially for the 67 Years Old Manager Sir Alex Ferguson could count themselves really very lucky that their Friendly Fixture against the Indonesian National Team had not been scheduled for today , and so the team had not checked into the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jakarta where the bomb blast took place which killed 8 people and injuring 50 others early Friday morning yesterday . The Ritz Carlton Hotel where the bomb blasts took place were supposed to have been the very same hotel that the whole Man United Team were going to stay in during their stay in Indonesia for their Pre - Season Friendly Match with the Indonesian National Team !

But now following the deadly bomb blasts in Jakarta yesterday , the Red Devils' Friendly Match with the Indonesian National Team are now off , as the team had decided to cancel their scheduled trip to the Indonesian capital , with players and the team's safety in mind .

First , it was the Malaysian die - hard Man United Fans that were made to suffer the agony and disappointment of having a scheduled Man United trip to their country being forced to cancel two Years ago , as Malaysia were part of the four team co - host Event in Asia's biggest soccer Event in the Asian Cup 2007 Tournament , which were jointly co - hosted by Thailand , Indonesia and Singapore as well . But for all these poor Indonesian soccer fans , who knows when they will finally get to see the stars in the flesh again ? Following the heartbreak and disappointment of not being able to watch the whole Confederation Cup Tournament LIVE last month , when soccer fans in Indonesia can get to watch the whole Tournament for FREE on two Free To Air TV Channels - RCTI & Global TV , subscribers of Starhub Cable , in particular Manchester United Fans in Singapore will once again be ' left out in the cold ' and ' forced ' not to be in the thick of the Action , as Starhub has confirmed that they will NOT be showing this Saturday's Manchester United Friendly Match with Malaysia XI LIVE on any of their Sports Channels !

Looks like the many hundreds and thousands of Man United Fans here in Singapore will have to be forced to once again ' miss out ' on all the Action , Drama and Excitement of another highly anticipated Big Match , though this time it is just a Pre Season Friendly Match ! They will face last Season's treble League and Cup Champions Barcelona on Thursday , 24 July 2009 and against Scottish League Champions Celtic two days later .

After which they will be involved in the Asia Premier League Trophy Tournament , where they will lock horns with fellow Premiership side West Ham United at the end of this Month on 29 July 2009 . And depending on the outcome of the Match , they may face another Premier League side Hull City later in the Tournament two days later .

Another London club Chelsea will get the chance to lock horns with their ex - Chelsea Manager , Jose Mourinho for the very first time since the Portugese left Stamford Bridge to be coach of Italian League Champion side Inter Milan whom the Blues will face in their Pre - Season Friendly Match . A wave of Red Tide is sweeping across Asia beginning this Weekend for a space of two Weeks , as EPL fans all over Asia begin to get into a frenzy as they are beginning to get all excited with the golden chance to catch a glimpse of their favourite and popular Soccer players touching down on their shores and playing a game of Friendly Match against their various National Team . The top two clubs in Red - Man United & Liverpool , who finished as Champions & Runners Up in the English Premier League respectively last Season , will be embarking on a trip to Asia that will include our neighbouring Asian countries too .

EPL fans in Malaysia and Indonesia will be able to catch their favourite players in action beginning this coming Saturday onwards , with the Red Devils due to play a Pre - Season Friendly Match against the Malaysian XI Selection Team . After which , two days later , the team will then head to Jakarta to play another Pre - Season Friendly against the Indonesian National Team at the 88,000 capacity Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta .

While fans in Malaysia and Indonesia get to see the Red Devils in action , Liverpool fans will not be left out either . The Premiership Runners Up will first travel to Bangkok on next Wednesday , 22 July 2009 to play a Friendly Match against a Thai National Side before heading to Singapore the very next day , where they will stay in Singapore for a duration of four days , which also includes the Big Match Friendly Clash against the Singapore Lions National Team at the National Stadium on Sunday , 26 July 2009 ( 7pm ) .

Man United trip to Kuala Lumpur this Saturday , also more than made up for the loss and disappointment the die - hard Man United fans had to suffer and overcome after the supposed trip to the country two years ago in 2007 was forced to be called off due to the country being involved as Hosts for the Asian Cup Tournament , where Malaysia , along with three other Asian countries - Indonesia , Thailand and Singapore were co - hosts of Asia's biggest football Event two years ago .

All because they are going to be ' left out in the cold ' of the whole Tournament totally as Starhub Cable will not be showing any of the Games LIVE or Delayed !

Although , it is still not entirely a ' Media shutout ' of all LIVE Action of this two Week's prestigious Tournament held in South Africa , as a Dress Rehearsal for next year's Actual Showpiece Event , as Indonesia's Free To Air TV Channel - RCTI Channel will be showing EXCLUSIVELY some of the Matches LIVE & selected Matches Delayed , however , not all soccer fans in Singapore do have access to the Channel and thus will still not be able to catch all the Drama & excitement !

First , the Good News ! The Good News is that we are just 1 DAY away from the Official Kickoff of the prestigious FIFA Confederations Cup Tournament ! Now ... for the Bad News ! The Bad News is that there won't be any LIVE Coverage of the two Week's Tournament on any of Starhub Cable TV Sports Channels ! Not even on it's 24 Hours Football Channel ( Channel 27 ) !

A check on the Starhub Official Site on the TV Schedules of four of Starhub Sports Channels for this Sunday ( 14 June 2009 ) when the Opening Match will be played between Hosts South Africa against Iraq ( at 10pm Singapore Time ) and the Second Group A Match of the day later at 2.30am ( Singapore Time ) between Euro 2008 Champions Spain against Oceania Champions New Zealand were not being indicated on any of the Channels TV Listings for the day !

Meaning , that is to say , none of Starhub Cable Sports Channels - Supersports Plus ( Channel 21 ) , Supersports Channel 22 , ESPN Channel ( Channel 23 ) & Star Sports Channel ( Channel 24 ) were not showing the Games LIVE ! And what was most shocking was the fact that even Starhub Football Channel ( Channel 27 ) TV Schedule did not indicate that they were going to show the Matches LIVE either as well !

Such a major Football Event with the biggest names & the most popular Nations taking part and yet football fans were being made to suffer a total media shutout & forced to be ' left out ' and stayed away from the Biggest Soccer Event this June ! Touted as a Dress Rehearsal for the actual Event held in South Africa next Summer in June - the FIFA World Cup which will begin on 7 June 2010 onwards next year , the eight team Event this year in South Africa featuring the Champions of each continents top Competitions aim to serve as a warm up for the actual showpiece Event .

The FIFA Confederations Cup will feature eight teams being separated into two Groups - Group A & Group B . Group A comprises of Euro 2008 Champions Spain , Hosts - South Africa , Asian Cup 2007 Champions Iraq and Oceania Champions New Zealand while Group B will see Brazil , Italy , USA & Eqypt competiting in the two Week's Tournament Beginnning 14 June 2009 onwards to 28 June 2009 in South Africa .
